Argentina

I will be serving as a missionary in the province of La Pampa in Argentina, which is vastly flat and dry much like the state of Kansas in the United States.  La Pampa is mostly surrounded my cattle ranching communities as Gauchos, similar to the American cowboy, began cattle ranching in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Gauchos were very influential in shaping the culture of La Pampa and have become a symbol of the open plains.

Weather

Since Argentina is on the other side of the equator, it’s seasons are opposite from ours in the United States! Christmas is celebrated in the middle of summer in Argentina when it’s winter for us. While we are enjoying our summer vacations, Argentina is enjoying colder temperatures and in some parts of the country, even snow! Click below to see what the weather is like right now in Argentina!

Descendants

Unlike many other South American countries, most Argentines do not descend from an indigenous group of Argentina but are descendants from European immigrants. In fact, around 95% of Argentina’s population are of European descent, mostly from Italy, Spain, and Germany. Much of the indigenous population died from diseases brought in by Europeans in the 16th and 17th centuries or due to enslavement. Since most Argentines are from Europe, Argentina is more influenced by Europe than any other Latin American countries, which is evident in their cultural norms, foods, and architecture.

Below is a picture of a monument that was created to honor the indigenous people of Argentina.
